Congratulations to Jereem Richards on Winning Gold – Commonwealth Games 2018

UTrinidad and Tobago was happy this morning, when it was thought that Jereem Richards won Silver at the Men’s 200M at the Commonwealth Games 2018, Gold Coast Australia. In a stunning turn of events, Zharnel Hughes of England was quickly disqualified as it was clear on the full frontal replay that Jereem Richards did not just stumble – he actually came in contact with Hughes’ arm. The officials considered it an impediment to Richards who was making a surge to the finish line. He was given Gold once Hughes was disqualified.

Team Trinidad and Tobago did not even have a chance to lodge a protest as the officials decided that Hughes was in the wrong and quickly changed their initial decision.

The final standings are:

  • Jereem Richards, Trinidad and Tobago – 20.12 GOLD
  • Aaron Brown, Canada – 20.34 SILVER
  • Leon Reid, Northern Ireland – 20.55 BRONZE

It is expected that England will lodge a protest. Therefore the medal ceremony will take place tomorrow.
As more details come to light we will update. (** Update the English appeal was rejected, Hughes is disqualified. See below the tweet from the English Team.)

You can see the moment of impact below.

IAAF Rule 163.2 was quoted as the reason why Hughes was disqualified

If an athlete is jostled or obstructed during an event so as to
impede his progress:
(a) if the jostling or obstruction is considered unintentional or is
caused otherwise than by an athlete, the Referee may, if he is of
the opinion that an athlete (or his team) was seriously affected,
order that the race be re-held or allow the affected athlete (or
team) to compete in a subsequent round of the event;
(b) if another athlete is found responsible for the jostling or
obstruction by the Referee, such athlete (or his team) shall be
liable to disqualification from that event. The Referee may, if he
is of the opinion that an athlete was seriously affected, order
that the race be re-held excluding any disqualified athlete or
allow the affected athlete (or team) (other than any disqualified
athlete or team) to compete in a subsequent round of the event.

In both cases (a) and (b), such athlete (or team) should normally
have completed the event with bona fide effort.
